The history of horses is a saga that spans millennia, deeply intertwined with the evolution of human civilization. Their journey began in the Eurasian steppes, where small, wild equines were first domesticated around 4000 BCE. These early partnerships marked a transformative moment in human history, as horses provided not only a means of transportation but also revolutionized agriculture. The introduction of the horse-drawn plow dramatically increased agricultural productivity, enabling the growth of large-scale civilizations. From the chariot-riding warriors of ancient Egypt and Rome to the mounted knights of medieval Europe, horses were essential to the ebb and flow of power. Over the last decade, the number of horses slaughtered globally has decreased from hundreds of thousands to now tens of thousands. The process often involves long and grueling journeys to slaughterhouses, where horses are crammed into overcrowded transport trucks, subjected to harsh conditions, and deprived of adequate food, water, and rest.
At the slaughter facilities themselves, these majestic animals frequently face inhumane and brutal methods of euthanasia, including the use of captive bolt guns or knives, causing immense suffering. This cruel fate highlights the moral and ethical dilemmas surrounding the treatment of horses, underscoring the urgent need for stricter regulations and greater awareness to protect these creatures from such a tragic and undignified end.
